Psychoeducational Assessment in North Bay, Ontario
North Bay's Local Provider for Expert Psychoeducational Assessments
Brainworks has a physical office right here in North Bay at 222 Main Street East. When your child is struggling at school — with reading, writing, math, attention, or behaviour — our CPO-regulated psychologists are here to find real answers, not put you on a year-long waitlist. A psychoeducational assessment is the foundational step to understanding why a child is struggling academically. It produces the formal, clinical report that your child's school needs to build an Individual Education Plan (IEP), and the documentation that Nipissing University and Canadore College require to grant academic accommodations. We serve children, teenagers, post-secondary students, and adults across North Bay and Nipissing District. Every assessment is completed or overseen by a psychologist registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) — accepted by Near North District School Board, all Ontario school boards, and all Ontario post-secondary institutions.

What Does a Psychoeducational Assessment Actually Measure?
A psychoeducational assessment is not a single test — it is a structured clinical process administered across multiple sessions by a registered psychologist. It examines how a person learns, how they process language and information, and why there may be a gap between their intellectual ability and their academic performance.
The assessment produces a detailed written report that identifies your child's cognitive strengths, flags specific learning challenges, provides formal diagnoses where warranted (Learning Disability, ADHD, Intellectual Disability, or Giftedness), and delivers targeted recommendations your child's school can act on immediately.
All Brainworks assessments are completed or overseen by psychologists registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO) — the same standard required by Ontario school boards and post-secondary institutions.
Who We Serve in North Bay
Brainworks' North Bay office serves three distinct groups — each with different needs and different reasons for seeking a psychoeducational assessment.
Children & Teenagers
For school-age children and teens struggling in the North Bay school system, a psychoeducational assessment provides the answers and the documentation needed to access proper support.
Falling behind despite consistent effort
Teacher concerns about learning, focus, or behaviour
Suspected LD, ADHD, dyslexia, or giftedness
Need IEP documentation for Near North District School Board or French-language boards
School board wait is too long — family needs a faster path
Post-Secondary Students
North Bay is home to Nipissing University and Canadore College, with over 10,000 full-time students combined. Many students arrive with undiagnosed learning challenges that only become apparent under the demands of post-secondary study.
Nipissing University or Canadore College accommodation documentation
Extended exam time, reduced-distraction settings, scribe access
OSAP bursary eligibility for students with learning disabilities
Professional licensing exam accommodation (LSAT, MCAT, nursing)
Adults
Learning difficulties don't disappear after school. Many adults in North Bay seek assessment after years of unexplained challenges — in the workplace, in further education, or in daily life.
Workplace accommodation documentation
Returning to education and needing formal support
Long-standing difficulties with reading, writing, or attention
Professional licensing exam accommodations
Clarity about challenges that have never been fully explained
Who We Serve in North Bay
Brainworks' North Bay office serves three distinct groups — each with different needs and different reasons for seeking a psychoeducational assessment.
Cognitive Ability
Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, working memory, processing speed, and executive functioning — the core building blocks of learning capacity.
Academic Achievement
Standardised testing of reading, writing (including spelling and composition), and mathematics, compared to age and grade-level norms.
Social-Emotional Functioning
Screening for anxiety, mood concerns, or behavioural factors that may be compounding academic difficulties — because learning and mental health intersect.
Academic Achievement
Standardised testing of reading, writing (including spelling and composition), and mathematics, compared to age and grade-level norms.
Language Processing
How the individual decodes, encodes, and uses language — including phonological awareness, which underlies reading and spelling in dyslexia assessments.
Strengths & Recommendations
A thorough analysis of cognitive strengths — not just weaknesses — paired with specific, school-ready recommendations that parents and teachers can act on immediately.
Nipissing University & Canadore College: Academic Accommodation Documentation
North Bay is home to two post-secondary institutions with a combined enrolment exceeding 10,000 full-time students. Many students arrive carrying undiagnosed learning disabilities or ADHD that went undetected through high school — only to find these challenges significantly harder to manage under the independent workload and timed exam pressure of university or college.
A psychoeducational assessment completed by a CPO-registered psychologist is the standard documentation required by all Ontario post-secondary accessibility offices to establish formal academic accommodations. Both Nipissing University and Canadore College will action a Brainworks report directly.
Students with a documented learning disability may also be eligible for an OSAP bursary to offset a significant portion of the assessment cost. Contact our intake team to discuss the specific documentation required before booking.

North Bay School Boards & IEP Support
An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is a legally documented support plan under Ontario education law. For a student to be formally identified as exceptional — and to receive an IEP — a psychoeducational assessment completed by a CPO-registered psychologist is required.
Brainworks serves families whose children attend schools operated by any of North Bay's school boards:
Near North District School Board
Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord
Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l'Ontario
Our reports are written to Ontario Ministry of Education standards and include all elements required to initiate the IPRC (Identification, Placement, and Review Committee) process. Once your child's school receives the report, they can act quickly — so can you.
CPO-Regulated. Board-Accepted.
All Brainworks psychoeducational assessments are completed or overseen by psychologists registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO).
This is the regulatory standard that Ontario school boards, post-secondary institutions, and provincial funding programs require. Our reports are accepted across all boards and institutions without question.
There is no difference in quality or credibility between a private Brainworks assessment and one conducted internally through the school board — the difference is timing.
Suspected learning disability, dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, or intellectual giftedness
Need formal documentation for an IEP, school accommodations, or provincial funding
Post-secondary student at Nipissing or Canadore struggling without documented accommodations
