Treatment

Once a presenting issue is understood, treatment helps individuals make the necessary changes to improve their life. Treatment will look different based on each individual’s needs and goals. Different types of treatment are required for different presenting issues. Below is a list of some of the different categories of treatment that we provide.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a talk-based therapy used to help individuals reframe their thoughts, evaluate their life experiences, and create meaningful change. Psychotherapy helps individuals whose behaviours or feelings are negatively impacting their daily lives and therefore their ability to enjoy life. We use evidence-based therapy approaches which are carefully selected based on our client’s needs, preferences, best practice guidelines, and the expertise of the clinician. Examples of these approaches include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, positive psychology, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) skills, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), expressive art techniques, compassion-focused, and solution-focused approaches. All clinicians at Brainworks that provide psychotherapy services are regulated and practice psychotherapy under the jurisdiction of either the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO), College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), or Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Social Work

Social work is used to help clients and their family members achieve the best quality of life possible and enhance their functioning at home and in the community. Social work counselling is useful for individuals with emotional, social, or financial concerns, interpersonal and family relationship issues, or losses of function and role due to a medical condition or disability. Social work at Brainworks includes evidence-based psychotherapy, psycho-educational services, couples counselling, family and group therapy, community work, vocational rehabilitation, and case management services. We also look at environmental concerns and help to remove any barriers. We also help individuals with system navigation, including what forms to fill out and how to access different benefits. All social workers at Brainworks are regulated and practice under the jurisdiction of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Rehabilitation Therapy

Rehabilitation therapy is a one-on-one therapy that focuses on regaining lost skills, learning to compensate for abilities that have changed, optimizing wellness, and progressing to the most independent level of functioning possible. Rehab therapy helps individuals living with the effects of an acquired brain injury, trauma, neurological and psychological conditions, or serious injury of any kind. Our Rehab Therapists integrate treatment protocols into relevant, meaningful projects within the context of the setting that best suits the client’s needs, whether it be in home, school, workplace, gym, or in the community. They record and communicate objective information to the regulated professionals overseeing their work so sound recommendations can be made based on reliable data.  Rehab therapists at Brainworks hold either a diploma or a degree in a related discipline, have demonstrated brain injury expertise, and have experience in community-based rehabilitation. They work under the direction of regulated professionals.

Neurorehabilitation Therapy

Neurorehabilitation therapy focuses on improving an individual’s cognitive functioning. Neurorehabilitation therapy helps individuals with cognitive impairments or inefficiencies in relation to brain injury, or other factors such as chronic pain, sleep disorders, aging, or chronic mental health conditions. Our neurorehabilitation therapists implement cognitive rehabilitation protocols, including psychoeducation, cognitive remediation, and compensatory strategy development, as prescribed and directed by neuropsychologists and/or rehabilitation psychologists. Our neurorehabilitation therapists work with clients in their home, on the job, in the community, or in office to provide education and implement strategies and tools to help them optimize function.  All neurorehabilitation therapists at Brainworks are regulated and practice under the jurisdiction of either the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT), the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Case Management

Case management manages how treatment proceeds by evaluating an individual’s health needs and coordinating a plan of treatment with other health professionals to best utilize available funding. Case management services are useful for those with serious injury who have access to external funding and need help ensuring that the funding is spent as effectively as possible. Brainworks' approach to case management is collaborative and consultative. We manage every aspect of our clients’ rehabilitation programs. Our focus is building relationships with stakeholders and managing strategic plans that will result in a positive improvement in our clients’ functioning and well-being. Our case managers assess, implement, monitor, and review the rehabilitation options and services required to meet our clients’ needs. We help our clients and their families navigate and understand the health care system, providing resources and support that will be needed to return to a productive lifestyle. All clinicians at Brainworks that provide case management services are regulated and practice under the jurisdiction of either the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO), College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), or Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).
