Occupational Therapists are members of the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario and are highly trained health care professionals. The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists defines occupational therapy as the “art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living, through occupation; of enabling people to perform the occupations that foster health and well-being; and of enabling a just and inclusive society so that all people may participate to their potential in the daily occupations of life”. The goal of occupational therapy is to promote health and well-being by enabling occupation. Much more than a chosen career, occupation refers to the activities and tasks of daily life that have value and meaning to a person.

Occupation is defined as everything people do to occupy themselves including self-care (personal care, mobility), productivity (play, school, employment, homemaking), and leisure (social activities, sports). Occupational Therapists are uniquely trained to address the combination of physical, affective, and cognitive functioning, as well as environmental barriers that impede a client’s return to their pre-accident function at home, work, and/or school. Occupational Therapists assist clients to learn new strategies (ways) of doing things, adapt materials or equipment that they use, and/or make changes to their environment.

Brainworks prides itself on providing innovative rehabilitation services to facilitate independence and minimize disability for individuals living with the effects of injury, illness, or who have disabling health conditions.
