Spirituality and Therapy; Spring 2011

The benefits of spirituality in therapy was the focal point, as Arden McGregor and Chris Papastamos took the lead in a presentation at the Canadian Pain Society’s annual conference that was held in Niagara Falls on April 13-16th. Arden and Chris had been selected by conference officials to speak on While Treating Mind and Body, Don’t Neglect the Soul: Incorporating Spirituality into the Assessment and Treatment of Chronic Pain. This workshop examined how the multidisciplinary treatment of the whole person with chronic pain goes beyond the mind and body, and the role that spirituality can play in enhancing recovery. Different models of spirituality were explored, along with spiritual exercises and strategies. Those who attended took away with them a keener awareness of the concept of spirituality, the many ways it can be integrated into assessment and treatment, and a better understanding of the practicalities of using a combined spiritual/health-care approach in helping those with chronic pain.
